What is Scalp Psoriasis?
Most people have heard of psoriasis before but are not aware that there is something known as scalp psoriasis. Scalp psoriasis is, quite obviously, the development of psoriasis on the scalp of the head. It can be a very frustrating condition to deal with just as any psoriasis can be, but if you learn more about it and what the different treatment options are, then you should be able to deal with it effectively.
What it is
Scalp psoriasis is a common skin condition that appears as dry, rough skin on the scalp. It appears as silvery skin patches although it can be hard to see these underneath your hair. You may feel as though you have dandruff or very dry skin on your head, but if you look closely at the scalp you can see the silvery patches.
It can even lead to temporary hair loss and infection, and so you need to deal with your scalp psoriasis immediately if you find out that you have it.
Treatment
Just as with any other psoriasis treatment, there are certain treatments that are available for treating scalp psoriasis. Keep in mind however that although there are some treatments that are the same for scalp and body psoriasis, there are a few treatments that are specifically designed to treat psoriasis of the scalp.
Treatments for psoriasis of the scalp must be repeated until the lesions are under control and hopefully completely eliminated. This can take up to eight weeks or longer, so you need to make sure that you stick to your treatment and not just cease use of it because you do not see the results that you are looking for right away.
You will need to work with your doctor when it comes to treatments, as everyone is different and everyone’s psoriasis condition is different as well. They will need to perform a few standard tests and rely on their knowledge and experience to determine which particular treatment is going to be the best idea in your case.
They will then keep an eye on your psoriasis and make sure that you are making the proper improvement. If your psoriasis is not being treated effectively after two months they will most likely switch you onto another treatment and try that one out for a while. They may even decide to use a combination or two or more treatments to get the best results and eliminate your psoriasis.
